When to worry...

A few weeks ago when we were at the GP for Matilda's ear infection he asked to weigh her. She hadn't put on any weight since before surgery (6 months old) so we had to return yesterday to re-weight. Well, the little munchkin STILL hasn't put on weight. Its been close to 3 months, and we're at the same height and weight. She seems fine - she's pulling herself to stand, crawls, sleeps well etc, but she just isn't growing. We'd been warned that this may be an issue with CMV, but I guess we're just going to have to deal with it.

So, if anyone has suggestions on how to get an 8 month old to gain weight, I'd love to hear them. We have a paed appointment at the end of November (yes, that's the earliest we could get - its a long story). Her current stats are 6.1kg (no idea what that is in pounds) and 61cm in length.

  1. I have been calorie loading Thomas for about a year due to his lack of interest in eating. Can you tell us what Matilda is eating on a daily basis? It might help us suggest some ideas for you...

  2. She eats a fair bit. Still breastfed (about 4 times per day). Breakfast she'll have weetbix (if she'll eat them) and we try to give her some fruit, although she's not keen on it. For lunch and dinner she'll have what we're having if its suitable (she eats most vegetables, meat, rice, pasta, couscous, etc), otherwise she'll have some mashed veges, rice etc. I give her custard between meals to try and increase her intake, and am adding cheese etc to sauces to see if that helps.

  3. It sounds like you are doing all the right things. With Thomas, I found luck in adding a dried milk additive to his milk (like Carnation Instant Breakfast), although it doesn't sound like Miss M is on milk yet. Also, avocado has been a huge help with adding good fats to his diet. I too add cheese as much as I can without making him constipated. Finally, I add gravy to as many things as I can. The gravy also helps with Thomas' texture issues with foods. Good luck and please keep us posted.

  4. I found your blog off another blog and I must say you have an adorable little girl! My son was diagnosed with a profound hearing loss and we are trying get him implanted prior to 12 months ( he's 6mo now)but we're not having very much luck. It's amazing that she was implanted so early and do so well.
As for her weight gain, is her Dr. concerned? sounds like she is getting plenty to eat. My suggestion would be to breast feed her more often or supplement with some formula. Children under 12 months should receive their main nutrition from BM or formula. Nursing every 2-3 hours and then eating 6-8 tbsp of vegatables and 2-4 tbsp of fruits through out the day. You may even try formula that has extra calories or fortifying your BM with more calories. Hope this helps!

  6. thanks for that :). I guess it concerns me that I think she does eat/drink enough - she just doesn't gain weight. Yes, our doctor is concerned, so we're seeing the specialist next month. We may try a high calorie prescription formula, but we need to wait for the paediatrician appointment to get a script.

  7. Hi Naomi, thank-you for commenting on Sienna's blog. As you know, Sienna has congenital CMV. It was only until she was 6 months old did her weight gain come to a halt. I also breasfed until she was about 9 months old. From the beginning, it has and probably always will be a weight rollercoaster ride. Although I fill her up with a balanced diet high in fat, she just doens't seem to gain. She also drinks Pediasure, a high calorie drink for kids, 1-10 years old. The doctor's told me for sure she'll gain when she starts drinking Pediasure but sure enough there was no change. She does get great nutrients from it but it is not helping her gain weight like she should be. Sienna just now weighs 20 lbs (9kg)at 2 years old.
You are doing a great job, my suggestion are to find a high-calorie formula, add high fat foods to everything and do as your doing. Try not to worry too much, you are doing a great job and unfortunetely in the end CMV is the reason behind her poor weight gain so as long as she is getting a balanced diet with high fats, you are doing everything you possibly can.

  8. Thanks Jenny. I'm glad that there are others going through it. Our doctor seems to have no idea about CMV, hence the reason why I'm on the list to see a paediatrician (who has kids with hearing loss himself). Will have to see if we can get pediasure in Australia. I can get others here, but they require a script.
